Crew Recency Calculation by Skylegs
Pilots and cabin crew must meet the legal requirements for recent flight experience. This is the crew recency (or currency). But it is not that simple for air operators to manually calculate the recency period and expiration every time they schedule a flight. And this becomes more difficult if the crew members perform flights outside of the organisation. See how Skylegs solves this with the automatic crew recency calculation.
The issues with manual recency calculation
The issues with manual recency calculation
An aircraft operator schedules a flight and assigns crew members. Before confirming the flight, the operator verifies the status of the crew members’ recency on the date of the flight. If there is no automated system, this process can be really cumbersome. See why:
- Team members waste time if they need to verify the recency status every time there is a new flight.
- Manual checks and calculations are prone to mistakes.
- The operator must contact the crew member to verify the recency status in case they perform flights outside of the organisation (for instance, this is the case of freelance pilots).
- The operator is not aware of the crew assignment priority, which should be based on their recency expiry dates.
Crew recency calculation by Skylegs
Skylegs calculates the recency expiry dates of all pilots and cabin crew automatically. This calculation goes according to the pilot’s logbook. Consequently, all flights are taken into account, even the ones happening outside of the main organisation.
In addition, the system looks for the pilots’ simulator trainings. When the training is complete, the recency automatically updates.
Skylegs shows the recency (currency) expiry dates of each pilot according to the rules below:
- 3 takeoffs and 3 landings in the previous 90 days.
- 3 night takeoffs and 3 landings in the past 90 days.
- 3 IFR approaches and 5 flights in the past 90 days (EASA ORO.FC.202 Single-pilot operations under IFR or at night).
And the cabin crew recency is also monitored:
- 1 flight in the past 6 months (EASA ORO.CC.145 Cabin crew refresher training).
Expired recency warnings
In Skylegs, when a user schedules a flight and assigns crew members, the system does the work and verifies the status of their recency on the date of the flight. If the recency will expire by then, it shows warnings on the mission page. This way all departments are aware and the appropriate actions can be taken.
All things considered, the crew recency calculation made by Skylegs becomes essential to an effective flight schedule and roster management.
