Paperless flying: Skylegs’ EFB and Device Management
Thanks to the innovative flight management platform, Skylegs, European business jet operators ASL and JetNetherlands are announcing their conversion to paperless flight decks. For over 2 months, JetNetherlands has formally authorized and integrated its procedures and manuals to fly paper-less, and ASL is next in line. By deploying iPads in all the aircraft, the electronic flight bag (EFB) is replacing paper flight manuals, operational documents and charts.
Together with Skylegs EFB app and Device Management, the pilots may retrieve all relevant flight data electronically. This cooperation has allowed the development of “electronic flight bags” that are able to store and display many of the printed materials that would typically be carried in the cockpit (as seen on the picture below, a JetNetherlands pilot carrying heavy paper manuals for each flight). From accessing aircraft and operational manuals to weather charts and pilot notes, all can now be digitally managed, resulting in improved pilot experience by faster and easier access to better information.
Furthermore, this launch also delivers time efficiency and improves pilot experience through seamless data exchange regarding flight planning. Thanks to the interfaces between Skylegs and PPS or RocketRoute, when a flight is entered into the Skylegs system, it is synchronised with the flight planning system thereby automatically producing a flight plan. The flight details (flight plan, weather, NOTAMs and much more) are then returned to Skylegs EFB app for the pilot to review and sign off.
Moreover, not only does it save time in the flight preparation stage, but it also eliminates the maintaining of the manuals through the digital document control feature. Keeping information up-to-date is enabling easy document revision. This also results in reducing cost and workload required for updating the documents.
As flight deck technology continues to evolve, it is inevitable that operating a paperless flight deck will become the norm, and the goal will be to strengthen the interface between pilots and computers in order to minimize errors and improve reliability whilst ensuring safety.
